While visiting England, an American tourist, "Mr. Smith," is involved in an automobile accident that leaves him with acute amnesia. His treatment, paid for by an anonymous benefactor, yields no results, and, upon his release from the hospital, his doctor warns that Mr. Smith may suffer from hallucinations. With only a woman's photograph torn from a magazine to guide him, Mr. Smith attempts to unravel his own identity and soon finds himself trapped in a world where hallucination and reality become indistinguishable. Is he on the brink of insanity? Or is his paranoia the result of a devious scheme by those who know who Mr. Smith really is?
