Robert Mitchum and Ava Gardner star in this steamy historical melodrama about a beauty who seeks revenge on the suitor who jilted her. When Barbara Beaurevel (Gardner) inherits a substantial fortune from her grandmother, she hopes to wipe away her wealthy but scandalous family's stigma by using her money to help others. Barbara is in love with Dr. Mark Lucas (Mitchum), but since he is married there is little she can do to win his affection. Nonetheless she schemes to make him hers, and when a murder takes place, she must choose between revealing her grandmother's shameful past and proving Lucas's innocence.
