Remote Control (1930)
“Don’t sell that stock. I see a better market for it soon.” A radio clairvoyant gives his rapt audience advice from the spirit world. But the clairvoyant is really the leader of a gang of thieves, the advice is a code to where the gang should strike next and a suspicious station employee (William Haines) is about to be taken for a ride! With his matinee-idol looks and baggy-pants comic gifts, Haines shines in this crime caper as a go-getter who gets the crooks, the girl and most of the screen time. More fun is provided by auditioning radio “artists,” including a cowpoke (Benny Rubin) with a Yiddish accent and a homely-mugged beauty expert (Polly Moran in unbecoming makeup) who’s darn lucky people aren’t yet watching TV!
