All at Sea
The last of the Ealing comedies closes that studio’s fan-pleasing comic tradition withwhat film historian Dr. Keith M. Johnston lauds in The Huffington Post as “a solid and enjoyable comic production with a sly sense of humor (often self-deprecatory), confident visual gags and a strong central character performance from [Alec] Guinness as Captain William Horatio Ambrose.” Ambrose, despite coming from a long line of seafarers, is a captain without a ship, an easily seasick officer who buys an amusement pier and begins to return it to shipshape order. But local officials try to thwart him, setting in motion comic events that will send Ambrose out to sea to prove his mettle. Starring as Ambrose is Alec Guinness, the acting linchpin in the Ealing classics The Lavender Hill Mob, The Man in the White Suit, The LadykiIIers and Kind Hearts and Coronets (in which Guinness played multiple roles, as he briefly does again in All at Sea).
