Her Cardboard Lover (1942)
“You must stay between him and me always. Always!” Love-struck Consuelo Croyden (Norma Shearer) can’t trust herself around dashing Tony Barling (George Sanders). So she hires songwriter Terry Trindale (Robert Taylor), who’s just as nuts about her as she is about Tony, to pose as her beau - and step in when Tony’s charms make Consuelo forget she’s a lady. In Her Cardboard Lover, three screen greats play a farcical game of he-loves-and-she-loves, complete with ruses, slapped faces, fisticuffs and Terry donning Consuelo’s satin Pjs, but it all comes romantically right at the end. With this frothy comedy, Norma Shearer bid adieu to the movies after 62 films, a Best Actress Academy Award® (for 193os The Divorcee) and over a decade as the reigning queen of the MGM lot. She surrounded herself with top talent for her farewell: her two leading men and director George Cukor, who helmed Shearer’s The Women three years previously.
