If You Knew Susie (1948)
Everyone who’s anyone in Brookford can claim ancestors who were heroes of the Revolutionary War. Everyone that is, except ex-entertainers Sam and Susie Parker. But then the Parkers find a letter from George Washington that acknowledges the heroism of a long-ago Parker patriarch and says essentially this to him and his heirs: IOU $7-BILLION. Compounded interest compounds the antic goings-on as Eddie Cantor – rolling his big eyes, flapping his hands and wiggle-waddling in the ways that made him a vaudeville favorite – plays Sam and reteams with his Show Business co-star Joan Davis. The film’s title is, of course, from Cantor’s longtime signature tune and he belts it out here in his typical unabashed style.
